Clever solution improves returnable solutions
The transport of cut flowers is a special logistical challenge. Together with the Dutch company Heyl bekuplast developed a sustainable reusable solution.
Special solution for cut flowers
The Dutch wholesaler Heyl supplies more than 1,000 customers throughout Germany with cut flowers, plants, and accessories. Short-term delivery, which Heyl usually makes possible within 12 hours, is a special logistical service. As a rule, around 10 trucks per day leave the logistics centre in Honselerdijk near Rotterdam..
Clever reusable transport packaging for more efficient logistics
To make logistics more efficient, Heyl decided to replace the existing transport containers. For this purpose, the company was looking for a specialist in reusable transport packaging. "We became aware of bekuplast through the pool service provider Container Centralen," reports Koen Heijl, who together with his brother Bram Heijl runs the successful family business in its second generation.
Storage container, order picking container, transport container – one box for everything
Reusable containers are used for internal logistics, order picking, and transport to the customer, and remain with the customer until the next delivery of goods. The transport container previously used by Heyl has been used since the company was founded. The aim was to develop a new container in which the flowers remain fresh and are transported carefully, but which is also more sustainable and ergonomic.
For these special requirements, bekuplast developed a tailor-made reusable transport packaging in close cooperation with Heyl. "Throughout the entire project realisation we have found the cooperation and exchange of ideas very positive", reported managing director Koen Heijl.
The special solution: bail arm containers in oversize
The result is a convincing reusable solution: the container developed and produced by bekuplast has an oversize format of 1,123 x 455 x 272 mm and offers a volume of around 104 l. With a low tare weight of only 4 kg it is much lighter than the old transport tub and, therefore, more comfortable to handle for employees and customers. The internal plastic brackets improve ergonomics at the workplace. Not only are they lighter than metal brackets, they are also low-noise, as they do not rattle in the conveyor system and when stacking. This is an advantage which the employees in the logistics centre at Heyl and also the customers appreciate. For traceability within the logistics process, all containers are equipped with barcode adhesive labels.
Sustainable through less material and lower CO2 emissions
When it comes to sustainability, the new reusable container from bekuplast scores in several respects. 25 % less plastic is required for production, thus saving valuable resources. The special construction of the container guarantees a high stability despite the lower use of material. During return transport, the empty containers can be stacked inside each other to save space. In addition, the new transport container weighs around 20% less, which has a positive effect on the fuel consumption of the truck and thus on CO2 emissions.
Approximately 30,000 containers are currently in successful use at Heyl.
