Banana box wins the Pro-K award 2018
The foldable banana box from bekuplast has been presented the pro-K award 2018 prize for innovation.

The pro-K award stands for quality in the field of plastics and is the only competition which exclusively awards prizes for plastic products. Since 1979 ‘Industrieverband Halbzeuge und Konsumprodukte aus Kunststoff e. V.’ has awarded creative and functionally designed products with the Pro-K award. This year, the banana box developed by bekuplast and the Euro Pool System won the pro-K award 2018 in the ‘storage and transport systems’ category.
The banana box developed by bekuplast and the Euro Pool System is the first collapsible, returnable transportation container made of plastic which has flexible characteristics of a cardboard box, the so-called compression effect.
The banana box is built in such a way that when stacking the transportation containers, friction is prevented between the base of the container and the bananas and the stacked containers slowly sink. As a result, the bananas are carefully compressed for transport. The sides of the stabile container are especially flexible so that the sensitive bananas do not develop pressure points. In order to guarantee optimum circulation, the ventilation holes have been especially developed for bananas in a ripening chamber.
Sustainable reusable packaging for bananas
Compared to a cardboard box, the advantage of the environmentally-friendly banana box is that it is returnable so that paper waste is avoided. As a result of the great reduction in volume (around 85 %), the collapsed containers can be transported in such a way, they save space.
The practical protective function and the ingenious sliding system of this innovative banana container won the jury over.
